Statement on the Islamic Center of San Diego Shooting

Tuesday May 19, 2026

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

The Islamic Institute of Toronto, its scholars, board of directors and community at large join with the Muslim Community in San Diego and internationally to mourn the victims of the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

May Allah accept all of the victims as Martyrs and grant their families comfort at this time of grief.

We call on our governments and law enforcement officials to step up security around mosques and Islamic schools, and urge our political leaders to help build an environment of peace and tolerance, and eschew the rhetoric that leads to Islamophobia and fear mongering about Islam and Muslims.

We applaud the Muslim security guard and others who sacrificed their own lives to ensure classrooms are locked down and that the shooters could not access them.

Please keep vigilant and report anything suspicious to the authorities.
