Salaat al Kusuf – Prayer at the time of a lunar eclipse

Starting on Thursday night and continuing into the early hours of Friday morning, Ontario residents will witness a full lunar eclipse, also referred to as a Blood Moon.

It is a sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ﷺ to perform a special prayer while the sun or moon is eclipsed. Consisting of two rakaats, each raka’ah comprises two bowings (ruku’h) and two recitations of the Fatiha and another Surah – each recitation longer than the one after it.
