Aminullah Khan: Remembering a Cherished Friend and Pioneer

By Shaikh Ahmad Kutty (October 14, 2024)

Aminullah Khan, a cherished friend and a pioneer within the Muslim community of the Jami Mosque, known as the “mother of mosques,” has passed away on October 12 at the age of 89.

I pray to Allah to forgive him, have mercy on him, and grant him entry into Jannah. Just a few months ago, his beloved wife passed away.
Before moving to Canada in the late sixties, Aminullah Khan served as a police officer in Guyana. I came to know him during my work with the Jami, where he was a dedicated volunteer. We developed a close friendship. He was an extremely loving and generous soul, often inviting my family and me to his home. Both he and his wife were generous hosts.

The Prophet reminds us to speak well of our brothers and sisters who have passed away. In this spirit, I wish to highlight some of Aminullah Khan’s admirable qualities. The Prophet said, “The best of you is the one who is best and kindest to his family.” Aminullah embodied this trait by caring singlehandedly for his beloved wife, steadfastly refusing outside help. He once confided in me that his only prayer was for Allah to take her soul before his so she would not rely on anyone else. His selfless sacrifice for her, despite his own failing health and frail body, is exemplary.

Aminullah was a connoisseur of books, an avid reader who eagerly acquired any significant new book, regardless of cost. A few years ago, he donated a vast collection from his library to the Islamic Institute of Toronto. His thirst for learning about Islam led him to attend all the Jami Mosque lectures and programs. He was also a regular attendee of Dr. Thabit Mahdi’s Sunday classes.

He was a man of firm convictions, ready to defend his views vigorously. Unlike many who remain indifferent to global affairs, Aminullah’s critical reading and attention to world news helped him form educated opinions on international matters. He astutely observed the detrimental effects of American colonial enterprises and wars. Having been a victim of American interference in his native Guyana, he eventually immigrated to Canada.

He and his wife will be deeply missed by family and friends. May Allah, the All-Merciful, grant him the honor of joining his family in the company of the prophets, saints, martyrs, and the righteous.
