Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Brothers and sisters, we want to address a serious matter. Durham Regional Police yesterday announced criminal charges against Mohamed Shaffee, who has served on the Board of the Islamic Institute of Toronto.
Mr. Shaffee has resigned from the Board.
To the best of our current knowledge, there is no information indicating that the alleged conduct occurred on IIT premises or involved any of IIT’s students or programs.
These allegations are serious and understandably troubling, particularly to parents and families. Our first responsibility is the safety and well-being of children and everyone entrusted to IIT’s care. We are reviewing our safeguarding arrangements and will take appropriate protective measures.
Our faith requires us to stand for justice, protect the vulnerable, honour our trust, and be fair. We must not dismiss serious concerns; equally, we must not presume guilt before the legal process has run its course.
Anyone with a genuine safeguarding concern should report it through appropriate channels, including directly to child-protection authorities where required.
May Allah guide us to act with wisdom, compassion, courage, and justice.
Jazakum Allahu Khayran.
