The Green Square Campaign is an annual initiative observed in the week leading up to January 29th to honor the victims and survivors of the 2017 Quebec City mosque attack. On January 29, 2017, a tragic shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Sainte-Foy, Quebec, resulted in the loss of six lives and left many others injured.
Participants wear a green square to symbolize the mosque’s green carpets, where the victims last stood to pray. This gesture represents solidarity with the affected families and a commitment to combating Islamophobia.
The campaign is significant as it raises awareness about the impact of Islamophobia and encourages communities to reflect on the importance of inclusivity and safety for all individuals, regardless of their background. By participating, individuals and organizations demonstrate their support for a more inclusive and equitable society.
