If these conditions are met, the new crescent will be visible somewhere on earth. Hence the new lunar month will start the next day, otherwise it will start on the day following next day. On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1441 AH are established as follows:

Ramadan 1441 AH:

The Astronomical New Moon is on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 2:27 Universal Time. On that day, everywhere in North and South America at sunset the elongation is at least 8 degrees and moon is at least 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore, first day of Ramadan 1441 is on Friday, April 24, 2020, insha’Allah.

Eid ul-Fitr 1441 AH:

The Astronomical New Moon is on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 17:40 Universal Time. On that day there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore Shawwal 1441 cannot start the next day. Hence first day of Shawwal is on Sunday, May 24, 2020, insha’Allah.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”FITRA AMOUNT: $10″ font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]

IIT Board of Directors Message

The Islamic Institute of Toronto looks forward to welcoming the blessed month of Ramadan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this Ramadan will be different. We will not be able to perform congregational prayers at the IIT. Although, we will miss the community interactions, let’s not miss out on the tremendous blessings this month has to offer by optimizing our good deeds and exerting ourselves to strengthen our relationship with our Creator. Let’s spend the time, renewing our relationships with our household and challenging each other to strive in the path of Allah. At the IIT, we will be offering a number of on line programs to help improve our Ibaadat and stay connected as a community. Please check our website for additional details. As we fast and pray, let’s remember the most vulnerable amongst us and support them in making this a memorable Ramadan. Thanks for your ongoing financial support to the IIT. We need you to continue to contribute in support of our many programs and projects. Jazakaum Allahu Khairan IIT Board of Directors & Volunteers[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

IIT Shuyukh’s Message

Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan is a time of spiritual transformation and community spirit. We can only achieve the objective of Ramadan by making a concerted effort to fulfill our obligations of fasting, prayers, charity, recitation and reflection of the Qur’an and community cohesion, with the degree of excellence that is required of us. We pray that Almighty Allah imbue us with the desire to go above and beyond the ordinary to achieve an extraordinary month of spiritual renewal. From our families to yours. Ramadan Mubarak! Eid program: Sunday, May 24

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_toggle title=”How to perform Eid prayer”]بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم PERFORMING THE EID PRAYER – A SIMPLE GUIDE   Esteemed Sisters and Brothers, السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته الحمد لله رب العالمين، واصلاة والسلام على رسوله الصادق الأمين، وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن تبعهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين، وبعد Our beloved Prophet and Messenger of Allaah () encouraged anyone who is unable to attend the Eid prayer with the Imam (congregation), to still offer two rakaats of nafl (Eid prayer) prayer, so that he/she is not deprived of sharing with the community, in the offering of prayers on the day of Eid, (Saheeh Al-Bukhari: Book of Prayer of the two Eids, Chapter(25):  “Whoever missed the Eid prayer should offer two rakaats of prayer: (2:74).”  This year is unlike any we have witnessed as we cannot gather for the Eid prayer. We therefore encourage all of you to offer the Eid prayer at home with your families as described below, then listen to the speech delivered live on the day of Eid from IIT (streamed on YouTube and Facebook). HOW TO PERFORM THE EID PRAYER The Eid prayer is a two rakaat (units), highly recommended (Sunnah) prayer, just like any two rakaat prayer, however, with one big difference: this difference is the addition of 12 extra Takbeeraat in the prayer as follows:
  • There are 7 extra Takbeeraat in the first rak’ah – NOT including Takbeer Tahreemah to begin the prayer
  • There are 5 extra Takbeeraat in the second raka’ah
  • In both rakaats, the extra Takbeeraat are recited BEFORE the recitation of Suratul-Faatihah.
STEPS:  First Raka’ah
  1. Imam Says “Allaahu Akbar” to begin the prayer.
  2. Then everyone, silently recites “Subhaanakal-laahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabaarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghairuka” (known as Du’a Al-Istiftaah – The Opening Du’a).
  3. Then the Imam recites 7 extra Takbeeraat – one after the other:
    • Allaahu Akbar (1)
    • Allaahu Akbar (2)
    • Allaahu Akbar (3)
    • Allaahu Akbar (4)
    • Allaahu Akbar (5)
    • Allaahu Akbar (6)
    • Allaahu Akbar (7)
  4. Then, after the 7th extra Takbeer, everyone folds their hands as normal in prayer, and the Imam then recites Surah Al-Faatihah and another surah.
  5. Then the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” and goes for Ruku’ and Sujood as normal.
Second Raka’ah
  1. The Imam says “Allahu Akbar” to stand up from the second Sajdah.
  2. Now, while standing for the second rak’ah, he recites 5 extra Takbeeraat – one after the other
    • Allaahu Akbar (1)
    • Allaahu Akbar (2)
    • Allaahu Akbar (3)
    • Allaahu Akbar (4)
    • Allaahu Akbar (5).
  3. Then everyone folds their hands as normal in prayer, the Imam then recites Surah Al-Faatihah and another surah and completes the prayer as normal.
NOTE: While reciting these extra “Takbeeraat”, the Imam and anyone praying with him, raise the hands, as in raising the hands with Takbeer Tahreemah to begin the prayer. May Allaah the Exalted accept from us our fasting, prayers, Qiyaam, du’as, Charities, and all good deeds. And may He gather us together one day soon, by His grace and permission. و عليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته   Prepared by Shaikh Abdool Hamid,  Instructor at IIT   [button title=”Download PDF” link=”https://islam.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/eid-prayer.pdf” target=”_blank” align=”” icon=”” icon_position=”” color=”#C03636″ font_color=”white” size=”2″ full_width=”” class=”” download=”” rel=”” onclick=””][/vc_toggle][vc_btn title=”View Eid-Al-Fitr Program” style=”custom” custom_background=”#c03636″ custom_text=”#ffffff” shape=”square” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fislam.ca%2Feid-program%2F|title:https%3A%2F%2Fislam.ca%2Feid-program%2F||” css=”.vc_custom_1590121424960{margin-top: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1587489472580{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;background-color: #025996 !important;}”]

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

[/vc_column_text][vc_toggle title=”What is Sadaqa Jariya?”]Sadaqa jariyah means ongoing or perpetual charity. It is a form of charity which, unlike other charities, survives the donor and continues to be a source of blessings for the donor long after they have passed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When a person dies, all his works cease except three things: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or righteous offspring that pray for him.” (Reported by Muslim and others on the authority of Abu Hurayrah) In order to explain this further, let us explain the concept of charity in Islam. [button title=”Read More” link=”https://islam.ca/sadaqa/” target=”_blank” align=”” icon=”” icon_position=”” color=”#C03636″ font_color=”white” size=”2″ full_width=”” class=”” download=”” rel=”” onclick=””][/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What is Zakah?”]“And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.” (Al-Bayyinah:5) The Arabic word ‘Zakah‘ is generally translated as ‘poor due’ or ‘religious levy’ but literally it means purification, growth, blessing and appreciation. Islamically speaking, however, Zakah is the community’s share in the produced wealth. More specifically, according to M. Umer Chapra, the renowned Islamic economist, Zakah is the financial duty of a Muslim “to pay out of his net worth or agricultural output, if these are higher than the threshold of Zakah, a specified portion as an indispensable part of his religious duties.” Although some writers mistakenly refer to Zakah as charity, it is not charity. Al-Sadaqah is charity as opposed to Zakah which is a compulsory religious duty conferred by God Almighty upon all Muslims whose wealth exceeds the prescribed limit. If a person’s wealth exceeds that limit, he/she is required to pay the rate of 2½% of total income or wealth to the Bait Al-Mal (the public treasury) annually for the upkeep of the poor and the needy. In the words of the Prophet (peace be on him): “Riches (i.e. Zakah) should be taken from the rich and returned to the poor.”[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What are the Obligations of Zakah?”]The main purpose of zakah is to help the poor and needy. When zakah is applied effectively, it goes a long way in eradicating poverty from the society–as it was demonstrated in the history of Islam. Although the primary recipients of zakah are the poor and needy, part of zakah can also be given to causes that are beneficial for the cause of Islam. In our time and age, this includes supporting institutions that provide essential services for the community in places where funds for such projects are not readily available.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Zakatul Fitr (Fitra) and Eid”]There are two types of Zakah in Islam. The first is the regular, compulsory charity (levied on the rich), also referred to specifically as Zakatul mal; it is the third pillar of Islam. The other is Zakatul Fitr, also known sadaqatul Fitr. In this book, we are concerned only with Zakatul Fitr. Zakatul Fitr is due on every person who has sufficient means to maintain himself and his family beyond the day and night of Eid, and it must be paid on behalf of every member of one’s family including infants.[/vc_toggle][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]
