The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses the criteria of European Council of Fatwa and Research (ECFR), which are that somewhere on the globe, at the sunset, the elongation should be at least 8 degrees and moon should be at least 5 degrees above horizon. If these conditions are met, the new crescent will be visible somewhere on earth. Hence the new lunar month will start the next day, otherwise it will start on the day following next day.
On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1441 AH are established as follows:

IIT Board of Directors Message
The Islamic Institute of Toronto looks forward to welcoming the blessed month of Ramadan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this Ramadan will be different. We will not be able to perform congregational prayers at the IIT. Although, we will miss the community interactions, let’s not miss out on the tremendous blessings this month has to offer by optimizing our good deeds and exerting ourselves to strengthen our relationship with our Creator. Let’s spend the time, renewing our relationships with our household and challenging each other to strive in the path of Allah. At the IIT, we will be offering a number of on line programs to help improve our Ibaadat and stay connected as a community. Please check our website for additional details. As we fast and pray, let’s remember the most vulnerable amongst us and support them in making this a memorable Ramadan. Thanks for your ongoing financial support to the IIT. We need you to continue to contribute in support of our many programs and projects. Jazakaum Allahu Khairan IIT Board of Directors & Volunteers[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]IIT Shuyukh’s Message
Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan is a time of spiritual transformation and community spirit. We can only achieve the objective of Ramadan by making a concerted effort to fulfill our obligations of fasting, prayers, charity, recitation and reflection of the Qur’an and community cohesion, with the degree of excellence that is required of us. We pray that Almighty Allah imbue us with the desire to go above and beyond the ordinary to achieve an extraordinary month of spiritual renewal. From our families to yours. Ramadan Mubarak! [/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_toggle title=”How to perform Eid prayer”]بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم PERFORMING THE EID PRAYER – A SIMPLE GUIDE Esteemed Sisters and Brothers, السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته الحمد لله رب العالمين، واصلاة والسلام على رسوله الصادق الأمين، وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن تبعهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين، وبعد Our beloved Prophet and Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) encouraged anyone who is unable to attend the Eid prayer with the Imam (congregation), to still offer two rakaats of nafl (Eid prayer) prayer, so that he/she is not deprived of sharing with the community, in the offering of prayers on the day of Eid, (Saheeh Al-Bukhari: Book of Prayer of the two Eids, Chapter(25): “Whoever missed the Eid prayer should offer two rakaats of prayer: (2:74).” This year is unlike any we have witnessed as we cannot gather for the Eid prayer. We therefore encourage all of you to offer the Eid prayer at home with your families as described below, then listen to the speech delivered live on the day of Eid from IIT (streamed on YouTube and Facebook). HOW TO PERFORM THE EID PRAYER The Eid prayer is a two rakaat (units), highly recommended (Sunnah) prayer, just like any two rakaat prayer, however, with one big difference: this difference is the addition of 12 extra Takbeeraat in the prayer as follows:- There are 7 extra Takbeeraat in the first rak’ah – NOT including Takbeer Tahreemah to begin the prayer
- There are 5 extra Takbeeraat in the second raka’ah
- In both rakaats, the extra Takbeeraat are recited BEFORE the recitation of Suratul-Faatihah.
- Imam Says “Allaahu Akbar” to begin the prayer.
- Then everyone, silently recites “Subhaanakal-laahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabaarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghairuka” (known as Du’a Al-Istiftaah – The Opening Du’a).
